Failure to make the initial Save leads to the Poisoned condition and damage being inflicted.
Poison follows the rules found in the DMG but instead of instantly doing full damage on a failed save poison damage will be broken down into d6 increments on a round by round basis until the poison has run it’s course (ie all the damage dice have been applied).
Success halves damage (rounded in favour of the victim). More virulent poisons may double the poison damage dice per round or even triple it until all damage is inflicted. If the poison does not inflict damage but only a condition then only a single save is needed.
